LASEMA Concludes Rescue Operations After Lagos Building Collapse, 27 Survivors Rescued

Rescue operations at the site of the collapsed two-storey building near Alakija Bus Stop in Satellite Town, Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area have been successfully concluded, according to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).

In a statement issued by the agency’s Head of Public Affairs, Afolabi Olawale, LASEMA disclosed that a total of 27 persons were rescued alive through the combined efforts of emergency responders, sister agencies, and community volunteers.

The rescued victims received immediate medical attention from the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) before being transferred to nearby hospitals for further treatment.

Tragically, nine persons lost their lives in the incident. According to the agency, four adults were confirmed dead before rescue teams arrived, while five additional victims, including a two-year-old baby girl, were later recovered from the rubble. The remains of the deceased were handed over to the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) for identification and release to their respective families.

LASEMA stated that its Director of Operations, Olanrewaju Akinsanya, alongside the Cappa Base Coordinator, Salami, supervised rescue activities at the scene.

To enhance rescue efforts, the agency deployed a heavy-duty excavator to complement two excavators already operating at the site, enabling responders to safely access trapped victims and expedite operations.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government has expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased and wished those receiving treatment a speedy recovery.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) to immediately conduct structural integrity assessments on neighboring buildings and ensure strict compliance with building regulations within the area.

Authorities also urged residents to promptly report distressed or defective buildings to relevant agencies, including LASBCA and LASEMA, to prevent future incidents.

The latest collapse in Lagos comes less than 24 hours after a similar building collapse incident was reported in Rivers State, raising renewed concerns over building safety standards across the country. Experts continue to attribute the recurring incidents to factors such as the use of substandard building materials, poor construction practices, and inadequate regulatory enforcement.
